Camino de Santiago: Fisterra - Muxía

Heading to the Costa da Morte: The extension of the Camino to Fisterra and Muxía is being renovated to offer greater safety and charm

HAVE YOU HEARD?: Arriving at the Plaza del Obradoiro is an unforgettable moment, but every year more and more pilgrims decide to continue on to the “end of the world.” The route connecting Santiago de Compostela with the imposing cliffs of Fisterra and the A Barca shrine in Muxía continues to gain popularity. To accommodate this steady stream of walkers, the Galician Regional Government has given final approval to an ambitious plan to upgrade its busiest sections.

The initiative aims to protect those who walk these trails, ensuring peaceful coexistence with vehicular traffic and enhancing the route’s environmental appeal.

A project designed to care for pedestrians and their surroundings

Materials that blend into the natural environment: Sand-cement paving, exposed aggregate concrete, and traditional stone will be used.

Respect for the landscape: Technical solutions will allow for the preservation of the old stone walls, native groves, and Galician understory.

Reinforced intersections: Vertical signage and specific measures will be incorporated to slow traffic at the most vulnerable points.

Listening to the Pilgrim’s Voice: On the Way to Xacobeo 2027

Those who travel this route agree on the overall tranquility of the path, but also on the need for more space between pedestrians and vehicles in narrow areas or where visibility is limited. With trail widths of up to 2.30 meters at the busiest points, the new routes will allow for a more relaxed and safer walking experience.

This series of improvements is part of a comprehensive regional strategy that involves work on more than 150 kilometers of the Camino de Santiago network and a total investment of nearly 40 million euros, fine-tuning every detail in preparation for the upcoming Holy Year of Santiago in 2027.

At caSAnosa, we celebrate every step forward that preserves the essence of the Camino and offers our guests and visitors a comfortable, memorable travel experience in perfect harmony with the Galician landscape.
