Muxía celebrates A Barca’s big day: excitement, tradition, and a massive outpouring of devotion along the Atlantic coast

HAVE YOU HEARD? Today, Muxía reached the climax of the Romaría da Barca, one of the religious and popular festivals with the longest history, greatest fervor, and largest turnout in all of A Costa da Morte and Galicia.

After days of festive celebrations, Sunday once again drew thousands of pilgrims and visitors who didn’t want to miss the most anticipated event of the year on the ocean shore.

The roar of gunpowder, the worship of stones, and maritime devotion

The main day of the festival began early with a solemn Mass, followed by a procession carrying the image of the Virgin from the iconic Santuario da Nosa Señora da Barca to the harbor. As tradition dictates, the procession was accompanied by the thunderous roar of “palenque” firecrackers (more than 60 dozen this year!), which shook the coastline and thrilled the thousands of attendees.

The celebration combines the sacred with traditional magical rites that attract devotees from all over:

• A Pedra de Abalar and A Pedra dos Cadrís: Hundreds of people have made their way to the coastal rock field to perform the ritual of passing under the Pedra dos Cadrís or attempting to move the Pedra de Abalar, seeking health and protection.

• The fireworks display: A traditional roar that echoes along the entire coast and marks the festival’s highlights.

• Maritime procession and blessing of the sea: The moving moment when the procession arrives at the port and pays tribute to sailors and seafarers.

• Music and orchestras until dawn: The festive atmosphere spills over into the town center and the port, enlivened by brass bands and performances by major Galician orchestras such as Los Satélites and Miramar.
